Birds of the Bible
We can learn many wonderful things both about God and ourselves from God's creation (general revelation). This includes the animal kingdom. As part of the creations story, Genesis 1:20-23 says:
And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky." So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." And there was evening, and there was morning - the fifth day.
There are several birds mentioned in Scripture. Each has a story to tell us both about God and ourselves. Here are some of the birds (or species) named in Scripture: ravens (Gen. 8:6-7); eagles (Exod. 19:3-4); quail (Num. 11:31-32); hawks (Job 39:26); owls (Psa. 102:6-7); doves (Matt. 3:16); chickens (Matt. 23:37); cocks or roosters (Mark 14:29-30). There are many others such as the bittern, cormorant, crane, crow, cuckoo, falcon, glede, heron, hoopoe, kite, lapwing, nighthawk, ospray, ossifrage, ostrich, partridge, pelican, pigeon, sparrow, stork, swallow, swan, turtledove, vulture.
