If Jesus conquered death then why do Christians still die?

Thank you for your question. Christian's die because they still sin and the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23; cf. Rom. 3:23). However, their death is different than the unbelievers. The Westminster Larger Catechism clarifies this saying:

Q. 85. Death being the wages of sin, why are not the righteous delivered from death, seeing all their sins are forgiven in Christ?

A. The righteous shall be delivered from death itself at the last day, and even in death are delivered from the sting and curse of it; so that, although they die, yet it is out of God's love, to free them perfectly from sin and misery, and to make them capable of further communion with Christ in glory, which they then enter upon.

For the unrepentant, death is something to be feared (Heb 9:27). Death is not that distant; it has been haunting the sinner since birth. Hating God; hardened to him and his ways (Job 41:24; Rom 8:7-8), he is eternally chained by his sin. Sadness beyond measure overtakes him. Complete dread comprises his soul. Repentance being impossible, there will never be a last day of torment for him. Caverns and pits of torture await. "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God" (Heb 10:31).

However, to the Christian death is a blessing; something to look forward too (2 Cor 5:8; Phil 1:21-23). Death for the believer is spoken of as a mere "sleep" - not associated with fear and dread (1 Cor 15:51; 1 Thess 5:10). Out of God's love for them, in physical death the righteous are delivered from all sin and misery. Completely free! No more failure. No more sickness. No more pain. No more crying.

But there is more. The sons and the daughters of God meet their Father face to face. They will have even a more clear and full communion with him. All that the Father enjoys they will enjoy. Eternity is theirs and they are God's! Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine, and I his.

The believer looks forward to that time when "there shall be no more death" (Rev 21:4).
